Work on the business, not in the business.
Posted under Business by Roman
This simple thought is perhaps the most important lesson that I have learned in school. If you think about it, it is so clear yet many of us forget about it. When working in your own business it is too often that we forget that we as the owner of the business can not do everything. We sometimes wish that we could take on jobs and roles that we should not. Thinking to ourselves that if you don’t do it that no one else can and if they can they will not do as good of a job as you. We spend time trying to control every situation that arises even if the employee is more than capable of doing it. That is working in not on the business. The difference is that when you work on the business you try to improve, expand, and innovate the business. I am not saying that you should just considerate on expanding and leave your business to run it self. What I am saying is that your role is to control and innovate. Gather information from your company and use it to innovate your company. Innovation is just increasing value while decreasing risk. If you work in you will never see the whole picture. If you are working on the business then you will know what to focus on and work on without the blindness of it being your business. A great example is when I was starting up my clothing line (didn’t go to well but that’s another story) my business partners and I tried to do everything including draw. TRUST ME when I tell you this we can’t draw to save our lives but we tried. Why? For the same reason you would. We did not think that other people would convene the mood and feeling that we wanted in our designs. If I was working on the business we could have focused on the marketing aspect and made up for the extra expenditure with sales. On not in is a concept that I hope you will look into. It will help with many of the issues that you maybe facing right now.

Hello,
Thanks for leaving a comment on one of my post a few days back.
Yes, I agree with you, as a business owner, we must learn to delegate the responsibilities to our workers.
