Why do they make up the core of my portfolio? Very simple lets take my largest position AT&T (T) I bought 100 shares at the end of March 2007 for 38.88. Today it’s trading at 38.59. I did not lose anything from this trade quite the opposite I have made money on this trade. AT&T pays a quarterly dividend of around 4.15% yearly yield. Hence for the time that I have held my shares there were 4 dividends issued. (.36, .36, .40, .40) This dividend yield totaled to 152 dollars, covering any losses that I may have received from the decline in stock price. Instead of taking my yield and spending it on whatever tickles my fancy at the time. I reinvested the dividend into AT&T by the use of DRiP (Dividend Reinvestment Read more…

I think it is about time I explain to everyone why I love the Dogs of the Dow. Anyone that knows me has been told about this site for the last 4 or 5 years. Why? It’s very great tool for research for the everyday investor. Dogs of the Dow (http://www.dogsofthedow.com/) contains 10 years of data. This data includes the yields, the price and if the stock belongs in which capitalization field. Small cap for some reason tends to out perform large cap. (That’s a different article) There is more then just dividend data for the stocks. It included total gains for the years from the stock. This is very useful in a recession to see how the stock has done in regards to both its own performance and relation to the market. The best part about this site is that they perform updates fairly frequently, to show the current Dogs of the Dow for this year. Allowing investors to see which stocks may be worth investigating further. Check it out and maybe you can add a few dogs to your portfolio.

Open Source and Commercialization are words that we use everyday but the definition that we associate with these words is incorrect. The correct meaning of Commercialization for this paper is” the process of introducing a new product into the market” (Wikipedia). This meaning is far from the commonly used meaning of performing sales. Open source is a “set of principles and practices on how to write software, the most important of which is that the source code is openly available”.
